Update from DC on Deficit Reduction Discussions and Medigap

As the Partnership continues to follow legislative proposals relating to Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), we wanted to let you know what some recent developments mean for people who rely on Medigap coverage.

On November 22, 2011, a joint congressional committee — which was tasked with coming up with a plan to reduce the federal budget by $1.2 trillion — announced that it would not be able to reach a consensus. Proposals impacting Medigap had been considered as part of the committee's discussions — changes that would have caused higher costs and fewer choices for millions of seniors who rely on Medigap.

During this debate, members of the Partnership made thousands of calls and wrote letters and emails to their Senators and Representatives to let them know how vital their Medigap coverage is to them. The stories you shared with us highlighted how even small increases in costs can be challenging to absorb for those living on a fixed income.

To all who have made your voices heard on how important Medigap coverage is to you, the Partnership offers a heartfelt "Thank You."

The country still faces budgetary pressures that will continue to prompt Congress to examine different ways to trim down the federal budget. As a result, potential changes to Medigap may be part of future discussions to reduce government spending. The best way to protect Medigap from changes down the road is by maintaining a dialogue with your elected officials about how you rely on Medicare Supplement Insurance for your health care needs and financial security.

Thank you again for all of your efforts. The Partnership will continue to keep you informed of issues impacting Medigap coverage.
