Medigap Safe for Now as President and Congress Reach Debt Deal

The Partnership to Protect Medigap is writing to update you on the debt deal reached by Congress and the President and what it means for Medicare Supplement insurance (Medigap).

Yesterday, the President signed the Budget Control Act of 2011, which increases the debt ceiling and reduces federal spending. A majority in both the House and Senate approved the legislation in votes earlier this week.

Changes to Medigap were not included in the initial round of deficit reduction. However, the bill does set up a second round of spending cuts that is scheduled for debate later this year.

In the second round of spending cuts, a bipartisan committee, composed of twelve members from the House and Senate, is tasked with identifying savings of at least $1.2 trillion from the budget over the next decade. It is possible that this committee could recommend changes to Medigap policies.

Members of the committee will soon be appointed by the leaders of the House and Senate from both political parties. They are required to report their recommendations on spending cuts by November 23 of this year and Congress would consider them on a fast-track basis with votes by December 23.

The Partnership to Protect Medigap will continue to share information with you regarding the deficit reduction process and how Medigap could be impacted.

Thank you again for all that you have done to speak out and help protect Medigap. Although Medigap was not affected in the initial round of cuts in the debt deal, it is still important that Congress hear how much seniors rely on this coverage, especially as those legislators consider future rounds of deficit reduction.
